Understanding the Roots of Chronic Pain

Everyone is welcome to join us Tuesday, Jan. 11th as Dr. Howard Schubiner, MD, the author of "Unlearn Your Pain", teaches us about the roots of chronic pain. Learn about Mind-Body Syndrome and how chronic pain is often connected  to changes in the nervous system that can be corrected with conscious thought. Dr. Schubiner teaches a 28 day program to help "break the connection" between "your nervous system and your physical pain." (Schubiner, 2010, p. 3)

Dr. Schubiner is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Adolescent Medicine. He has spent most of his career at Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit. He has conducted research studies, taught medical students and residents, authored articles in medical journals, and practiced medicine for 33 years. He participated in the creation of a holistic medical center and studied acupuncture in China.

A former sufferer of chronic neck pain himself, he has learned to get rid of aches and pains by recognizing them for what they are. Why do people in Norway that suffer from Whiplash have fewer symptoms of neck pain then those in the US? We hope you are able to join us to learn about a significant cause of chronic pain and how to find relief in this holistic approach

Embracing Holism in Your Life

What is a holistic nurse? Can you be holistic without being a nurse?

Tuesday, May. 10th @ 7PM you may change how you look at your life.
Learn the characteristics of a holistic being and what it means to be "present", how to incorporate self care in your life, and how a holistic person embraces life with a positive outlook.
Discover some of the history of holism in the country and state from nurses that have lived through this metamorphosis.
This will be a panel discussion with long time holistic nurses Janis Campbell and Dale Treese that work in traditional nursing environments,  and two  nurses that have holistic businesses Pauline Rzepecki, and Pamela Sadler

Janis has been a member of MHNA since before it became the MHNA.  Dale was the 111th certified holistic nurse in the country! These holisitic nurses have much to share on creating a holistic environment in their personal and work lives.

Pauline and Pam both have their own holistic practices. Pauline teaches hypnobirthing and helps people find balance in their mental/emotional outlook which, in turn, helps the physical. Pam is a health coach that helps people find balance between conventional medicine and complimentary and alternative medicine, which helps with physical/mental/emotional and spiritual balance.

We will look at what it takes to become certified as a holistic nurse and what the benefits of that certification are.
This will be an interactive discussion that will help you embrace holistic concepts in your life and work place.Hope you join us for what promises to be an active discussion that could improve your life.

We are also looking forward to the future of our organization. A discussion on Holism will provide us with the perfect background to frame a discussion, we as an organization are having. We will spend the last portion of our discussion seeking specific input regarding challenges and directions you would like to see our organization go. This is going to be a very important discussion. We hope you will all clear you calenders to attend.

This discussion will be continued at a "Vision Retreat: Creating a Care Plan for Our Organization". This day long retreat will be at the home of Co-President Pam Sadler. Car pooling can be arranged by contacting Kathy Oakford: koakford@gmail.com.

All MHNA Members are invited!

The date is Sunday, June 5th from 9AM to 5 PM.
The place: 3668 Peck Rd, North Branch, MI 48461. (This is in Northern Lapeer County in the southern thumb area.)
This will be a potluck. Contact Pam at healthleader.sadler@gmail.com for more information. RSVP to Pam as well.

If you are greater then 2 hours away please contact Pam. She has the ability to put some people up for the night.

If you cannot attend, please take a few moments and drop us a line at michiganholisticnurse@gmail.com and share your thoughts on our organization, and what you would like to see happening in the future and how you can help! We are an organization of working health care professionals. We need to streamline our procedures and accept more hands to help us fill the vision that we have put before us.

How to Balance All Your Hormones for Life: A Functional Approach

We are about the sum of our hormonal interactions.  Without hormones life would come to a halt. This talk will address all the major hormones and some of the minor hormones as well as updates on menopause and andropause from an endocrinology perspective plus a little philosophy on aging. We will address the 5 crucial lifestyle factors that contribute to a healthy hormonal system as well as how an imbalanced hormonal system sets you up for the chronic diseases of aging and degenerative disease. Hormones are always dynamically changing. What we hope to do is achieve relative balance between them like an orchestra that that stay in tune and play the music of life without painful discord. People have more control over this than they think.

Dr. Borg graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English. She then served 6 years in the Air Force in the medical field, earning a MA in public administration. Bowenwork is the topic for our Sept 14th meeing

On Tuesday, September 14, 2010, MHNA is pleased to welcome Dena Bowen, who will speak about and demonstrate Bowenwork. All holistic minded people are welcome to attend. Nurses will receive 2 Continuing Nursing Education Credits.

What is Bowenwork?

Bowenwork is a minimal touch type of therapy. A dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy, it was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. It utilizes small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly.

Bowenwork usually results in the relief of many specific injuries and other health problems, both acute and chronic. Signals are delivered to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves) and the body does the rest.

Please join us and experience this delightful modality. Your body will thank you!

Juggling Your Feminine Assets - May 11th

Tuesday May 11, 2010 @ 7 PM.

MHNA is very pleased to present:
Cathy Holland RN, BSN, IBCLC, LCCE and our very own treasurer.
She will be speaking about how to juggle our feminine assets to create breast health.

Those who know Cathy will realize this won't be your typical lecture. Be prepared to have a lot of fun as well as learning more about this timely topic. The program will cover as many solutions and nuggets of knowledge as our time will allow. Some of these nuggets will include:
  • Historical and emotional perspectives of breast health
  • Testing and breast health
  • What you eat matters
  • Lymph drainage therapy (bring a doll if you have one to practice this healing art).
Words from our presenter:
They say our names are not an accident. So "Chatty Cathy" is a perfect fit. I have always enjoyed learning and sharing everything I learned with anyone who will smile at me. Over my 46 years as a registered nurse, I have worked in all aspects of Women's Health. Currently Lamaze, HypnoBirthing and Lactation Consulting are my Women's Health focus.

About 15 years ago the holistic world and Energy Medicine also became a major focus. Using food to heal, CranioSacral Therapy, Lymph Drainage and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) are just a few of the modalities that I practice at every opportunity.
